Like everyone else on the internet, we love avocados! Creamy, smooth and buttery, packed with health benefits and protein, avocados manage to find their way regularly into our salads, dips and sandwiches.

The most gorgeous trend? The avocado rose: an avocado that looks like someone painstakingly carved it into a flower. When we spotted this clever presentation on Instagram, we immediately turned to our Test Kitchen to see if they could figure out how to make an avocado rose. Luckily, the technique is much easier than you’d expect!

Follow along with the few steps below to serve these avocado flowers at your next brunch.

We bet you didn’t know these little-known avocado facts.

How to Make an Avocado Rose

Ingredients

  • 1 avocado, ripe but still firm

Editor’s Tip: Here’s how to tell if an avocado is ripe.

Tools You’ll Need

  • Paring knife: For thin, precise avocado slices, there’s nothing better than a paring knife. This knife from Zwilling is on our list of knives every cook should own.
  • Cutting board: A sturdy cutting board is a must in every kitchen. This chopping block from John Boos has enough room to roll several avocado flowers.
  • Chef’s knife: If you don’t have a paring knife on hand, reach for a chef’s knife. The right-angle end is perfect for removing avocado pits!

Directions

Step 1: Cut and peel the avocado

Slice the avocado in half. Take out the pit, either by scooping it with a scoop or tapping the pit firmly (but carefully) with your knife blade and twisting to remove. Then, peel the skin off the avocado halves.

Step 2: Slice

Cut the avocado widthwise into very thin slices. Take your time with this step! The key to a beautiful, successful avocado rose is to make super-thin, even slices. Take a look at these tips for cutting an avocado the right way.

Step 3: Fan out the slices

Very gently, fan out the avocado slices. Be careful not to crush the fruit, or else it will turn to mush. This is what happens when you eat an avocado every day.

Step 4: Twist the avocado flower

Gently curl your avocado slices to make a rose shape. Start at one end and curl toward the center. Keep twisting to make a pinwheel-like shape.

When the fruit is curled up, the fanned slices resemble rose petals. Have leftover avocado? Learn how to prevent an avocado from turning brown.

Step 5: Practice makes perfect

Your first avocado rose might have a squished side, or be unevenly wrapped. Don’t sweat it. If you make two or three roses in one session, the slicing and twisting motions will feel more natural. You can use less than a full avocado half to make smaller roses, especially if you want to practice.

It happens all the time. I’m in the mood to bake, I’ve got a great recipe, all of my ingredients are on the counter, and then I read the dreaded words: butter, softened. My butter is rock hard from the fridge. Oh, bother.

How Long Does It Take to Soften Butter?

Left on the countertop at room temperature, a stick of butter takes at least 45 minutes to soften. If you’re the type who plans ahead, that’s no big deal. If not, here are a few ways to soften butter quickly.

How to Soften Butter Fast

You’ll need:

  • Butter (as much as your recipe calls for)

Method 1: Fairly Fast

Our first method is the easiest: Simply cut the butter into cubes. The smaller the pieces, the quicker they’ll come to room temperature.

Cut the butter stick in half so you have two long rectangles side by side. Stack them together and slice again. This yields four butter strips. Keep them stacked, and then slice perpendicular to your cuts. The butter will fall into cubes, and the cubes will soften fairly quickly, in about 15 minutes. (Now’s a good time to measure and prep the remaining ingredients.)

Method 2: Faster

The second method is more labor-intensive, but it will help the butter soften even faster. With a rolling pin, roll or pound the butter out flat. Whether rolling or pounding, the friction will warm the butter-and the broader surface area will encourage faster softening.

Test Kitchen tip: To minimize the mess, we like to flatten butter between two sheets of waxed paper. This prevents the butter from sticking to the rolling pin or the countertop. Brilliant.

Method 3: Super Fast

The last method, shredding, creates a dirty dish, but it’s the quickest of the three. Partially unwrap the butter (use the wrapped half as a handle to keep your hand clean) and shred it using the largest holes of your box grater. The butter will reduce to a fluffy heap, similar in appearance to shredded mozzarella cheese.

The principle here is the same as in the first method: Smaller pieces soften faster. Shredded butter is ready to use in your recipe right away.

Test Kitchen tip: We also like to use this method when we’re making pie crust, which actually requires cold butter. In this case, we freeze the stick of butter before grating it. This creates small, hard pieces of butter that help make any crust tender and flaky.

Method 4: The Lazy Way

If you’re feeling lucky, you can forego the aforementioned methods. Just place the butter and sugar into a stand mixer, and start creaming on low speed. (Higher speeds increase the likelihood that butter will catapult out of the bowl.) You’ll need to increase the mixing time to allow for the butter to warm and soften and for the aeration of the creaming process to take place. You can also try this quick trick to soften butter using a warm glass.

Ingredients

  • 1-1/2 cups half-and-half cream
  • 3 large egg yolks
  • 3 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 3/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 8 slices day-old brioche bread (1 inch thick)
  • Optional toppings: Butter, maple syrup, fresh berries, whipped cream and confectioners’ sugar

Ingredient Notes

  • You can use any type of milk you have on hand, but half-and-half adds a ton of richness. Avoiding dairy? Almond, soy, coconut and cashew milk are all good substitutes.
  • To mix up the flavor, swap out the brown sugar for honey or maple syrup.
  • Experiment with different types of extract, like almond, coconut or orange.

Begin by constructing a French toast assembly line. Take out your bread and set it aside. Then, grab a shallow bowl that can fit one or two slices. To make a rich custard, whisk together the half-and-half, egg yolks, brown sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg and salt. Be sure the eggs are entirely whisked, with no sign of separation.

Preheat a greased griddle over medium heat.

Dip the day-old brioche bread into the custard, using one hand to immerse it. Allow for it to soak for about five seconds on each side. This will give your toast a creamy middle without making it too soggy. Let any excess drip off.

It’s time to get cooking! Place the soaked bread on the buttered griddle and cook until the bottom turns golden brown. (You can lift a corner to take a peek.) Then flip the toast and repeat. Once both sides are cooked to your liking, your pièce de résistance is ready to serve.

What Kind of Bread Works Best for French Toast?

When it comes to French toast, fresher doesn’t always mean better. In fact, the French call this dish pain perdu, which translates to “lost bread.” Use day-old bread that’s sturdy and slightly stale. This way it’ll soak up the custard without becoming soggy.

If you only have fresh bread on hand, you can dry your slices out a bit by lightly toasting them. You can do this by popping them in a 300°F oven for about 10 minutes, giving them a flip halfway through. Make sure they’re not getting much color on the slices, you’re aiming for dryness, not toastiness.

Why Is My French Toast Soggy?

There are a few reasons why your French toast might turn out soggy. The first we covered in the question above: your bread could be too fresh. Another culprit could be leaving your bread to soak in the custard mix for too long. You should only let your bread soak for about five seconds on each side.

You could also be cooking your French toast on too high of heat. This chars the outside of the toast without properly cooking it through, leaving you with a soggy slice. Keep your griddle or skillet at medium heat for the best results.

Can I Make My French Toast Custard Ahead of Time?

It’s not the best idea. Your custard can start to separate and leave you with fried egg-like spots on your French toast. Also, eggs are prone to picking up scents and flavors from the fridge when they’re out of the shells, so your custard could taste off. If you need to free up some time in the morning, go with this overnight French toast recipe for something hands-off.

How to Make it Your Own

Here are some ways you can customize your French toast:

  • Go savory. Don’t like sweets for breakfast? Make your French toast savory instead. Omit the sugar and extract, then serve it with a few sausage patties and scrambled eggs. Better yet, get some inspiration from this bacon-packed recipe.
  • Play with spice. Ground cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves are classics, but you can get creative with lemon zest, anise, cardamom or whatever else your spice cabinet has to spare.

If you have any leftovers, French toast is best kept by storing it in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 days. Reheat leftovers by toasting them in a skillet with butter or giving them a zap in the microwave for about a minute.

Freezing can let you keep your French toast much longer. To do so, allow your French toast to cool completely, then place them in an airtight container with parchment or wax paper between any layers of toast. Store in the freezer for up to 3 months.

Reheat frozen French toast by placing the slices on a baking sheet. Bake them at 425°F for 8 minutes, then flip the slices and bake for an additional 10-12 minutes, or until they’re golden brown and heated through.
