I’ll admit it: I love getting mail. And, thanks to gift of the month clubs, I can treat myself to a special delivery every couple of weeks. As Taste of Home’s Senior Shopping Editor, I’ve tried everything from coffee clubs to plant subscriptions. But there’s one service that’s truly stolen my heart. Say hello to Vellabox. It’s a candle subscription that embodies chic coziness all year long.

What is a Vellabox candle subscription?

Vellabox Candle Subscription

Candles are personal. And Vellabox takes the guesswork out of delivering the perfect scent—either to you or a loved one. Let me show you how it works in my Vellabox review.

First, you take a short quiz identifying your favorite scent profiles, where you like to burn candles, scent strength, burning frequency and more. From there, you choose between three size options: Lucerna (4-ounce candle), Ignis (8-ounce candle) or Vivere (16-ounce candle). Then, sit back, relax and wait for scented candle bliss to appear on your doorstep.

Vellabox Candle Subscription

Each box includes a bonus gift—think a lip balm, air freshener or trinket tray—and a card detailing your candle of the month. Choose to receive a Vellabox delivery monthly, or pre-pay for 3, 6 or 12 months at a time. U.S. orders ship free!

Beyond the subscription, you can peruse the Vellabox shop to stock up on your favorite scents and candle accessories.

Why I Love It

Vellabox Candle Subscription

At this point, pretty much every candle in my home is from Vellabox. I’ve been testing the service on and off since 2020, so you know this Vellabox review is worth it.

Without fail, I tear into every candle box like a kid on Christmas morning. Even though I’ve identified my favorite scents and have at least a general idea of what to expect, it’s still so much fun to smell each option in real life.

Each Vellabox candle is artisan-made from 100% natural wax, cotton wicks and phthalate-free fragrance oils. As someone with a sensitivity to intense fragrances, these candles burn more cleanly than other brands I’ve tried.

Plus, the packaging is impeccable. Each candle is wrapped in a seasonally appropriate cloth bag and then tucked inside a box with the surprise goodie and candle card. Over several months of testing, I have not once received a broken or damaged candle. And those cloth bags? I love that they’re more sustainable than bubble wrap, and I have found endless uses for ‘em around my house.

To burn the candles, I start by trimming the wick. (This step is critical to prevent wick mushrooming and scary-high flames.) I also make sure I have plenty of time for the initial burn. You want to create an even layer of melted wax all the way across the top of the candle to prevent tunneling. The larger the candle, the longer this process takes. I like to tackle the initial burn during a movie night or when settling in with a good book. Tough job, I know.

While I’ve sampled dozens of candles through the years, Autumn Nights is my latest seasonal obsession. It’s a little sweet, a little spicy and the absolute best way to set the mood for a fall Gilmore Girls binge session. (Especially when I place it under a candle warmer lamp!)

You can tell from my Vellabox review that it also makes a great gift. It’s my go-to when I don’t want the headache of shipping a gift myself or when someone’s birthday sneaks up on me. Ordering takes mere minutes, and I know they’ll enjoy the gift month after month.

Where to Buy a Vellabox Candle Subscription

Vellabox Candle Subscription

You can order your very own candle subscription through the Vellabox website. Subscriptions start at just $12 a month for the small Lucerna box, $22 for the medium Ignis box and $29 for the large Vivere box. Considering you get a candle and an extra goodie, the value is well worth the price tag. If you’re a candle lover, don’t hesitate to hit “subscribe.”

Solo Stove Bonfire Review: This Sleek Fire Pit Is Truly Smokeless https://www.tasteofhome.com/article/solo-stove-bonfire-review/ Thu, 13 Jul 2023 13:28:05 +0000 https://www.tasteofhome.com/?p=1900018 Smell ya later, smoke. Our Solo Stove Bonfire review confirms this sleek fire pit is truly smokeless.

Few things in life are as mesmerizing as fire. I could sit and watch flames dance and embers burn for hours. Add in some good food (hello, s’mores!) and equally good conversation, and I’ve got myself a perfect evening—so long as the right fire pit is in play. After all, the quickest way to ruin said perfect evening is with flying sparks, irritating smoke and an overwhelming bonfire smell on my hair and clothes.

Enter: the Solo Stove Bonfire review. We tested this sleek, smokeless beauty to see if it lives up to the hype. Trust us when we say—summer nights and bonfire parties will never be the same.

What is the Solo Stove Bonfire fire pit?

The Solo Stove Bonfire is a stainless steel fire pit. It’s designed with holes along the top and bottom to promote better airflow, cleaner burning and little to no smoke. Plus, thanks to the included carrying case, the Bonfire is portable. It’s light enough to tote to the beach, campground or tailgate. The brand offers a host of accessories too. Easily customize your Solo Stove for cooking, protecting kids and pets or lighting with ease.

The Bonfire is Solo Stove’s backyard fire pit, yielding a mid-size footprint. You can also opt for the tabletop Mesa, highly portable Ranger and extra-large Yukon. The brand also offers a Pi pizza oven, which is one of the best outdoor pizza ovens money can buy.

How We Tested It

For this Solo Stove Bonfire review, I started using the fire pit in May 2023. I’ve used it to burn kindling, logs and paper.

Setup

Solo Stove Bonfire

When my Solo Stove arrived, I was eager to get burning. But first, I needed to unbox and set it up. Luckily, the process was super simple and took mere minutes.

The Solo Stove Bonfire comes with four main pieces: the fire pit body, an ash pan, a base plate and a flame ring. I opted for the model that includes a stand for safe burning on (almost) any surface. And you also get a sturdy carry case for easy transport.

To assemble, I put the fire pit base on the stand. Then, I simply placed the ash pan in the bottom center of the fire pit, then nestled the base plate above the ash pan with the dome pointing up. Easy-peasy! And now it’s ready to use.

Starting the Fire

Solo Stove Bonfire

Now, I’ll admit. I’m not very handy in the great outdoors. My survival skills are pretty much nonexistent, so starting a fire is often a challenge. But the Solo Stove makes it easy. I nestled some leaves, twigs and small wood pieces at the base, then stacked a few larger birch logs on top. It took a little time to get my kindling to light. (Looking back, I think my leaves were a little wet). But the flames eventually caught when I added a few crumpled sheets of paper.

Once the fire was burning, I added the flame ring. This feature helps guard the fire from gusts of wind and streamlines the look of the Solo Stove.

One thing to keep in mind: you may experience some smoke in the first few minutes while lighting the fire. This is completely normal. It takes time for your Solo Stove to get hot enough to eliminate smoke. Also, make sure you use completely dry wood and kindling—excess moisture will produce smoke.

Enjoying the Fire

Solo Stove Bonfire

Once my fire was lit, it was time to sit back and relax. Watching fire in the Solo Stove was incredibly mesmerizing, thanks to the double-walled design. The holes at the top give the appearance of a gas fire pit the flames are so perfect. It’s incredibly fun to watch!

Plus, in addition to no smoke, there were no blowing ashes or sparks. I was able to get very close to the Solo Stove without fear of being burned by rogue flyaways. The fire itself gave off an amazing amount of heat, which, on a chilly night, was much appreciated. I can’t wait to use the Bonfire in the fall and winter months too.

In true Wisconsin fashion, I couldn’t complete a Solo Stove Bonfire review without cooking a brat over the open flames. I loaded up my skewer and started turning. In just minutes I had a beautifully blistered sausage. Marshmallows, with the help of some telescoping sticks, also toast like a dream. And I’m already drooling about next weekend’s treat: pudgy pies. Pretty soon I’ll be able to cook my way through our collection of fire pit recipes.

Cleanup

Solo Stove Bonfire

When it was time to call it a night, I let the Solo Stove burn down to mere embers. I’ll admit, this was one step that made me a little nervous. Per the owner’s guide, you’re not supposed to throw water onto the fire, so we were left with little choice but to let the fire burn down. After a little research, I’m planning to buy the Solo Stove lid. I’ll sleep easy knowing nothing can get in (or out) of the smoldering fire pit.

The next day, once the ashes were fully cool, it was easy to simply lift off the base plate and empty the ash pan. I found that a few piles of ash escaped outside of the ash pan, but luckily the unit is light enough to lift up and empty without much hassle. All in all, cleanup was just as easy as setup, and after just a minute of work, the Solo Stove is good to go for my next fire.

Pros

  • Truly smokeless
  • Easy to transport, thanks to streamlined design and included carrying case
  • Burns cleanly and evenly, resulting in no woodsy smell on hair and clothes
  • Easy to light and keep burning
  • Gives off more heat than other fire pits, and also sheds few ashes or sparks
  • Wood burns down completely, leaving no half-burned logs
  • Sturdy construction that will last for years with proper care and use
  • Compatible with several accessories for cooking, safety and more

Cons

  • Pricier than other fire pits
  • Additional tools and accessories sold separately
  • Stainless steel exterior gets very hot while burning
  • No great way to extinguish the fire

FAQ

Solo Stove Bonfire

Does Solo Stove Bonfire keep you warm?

In my experience—yes! Wisconsin nights can get damp and chilly, even in July, but the Solo Stove kept me toasty and comfortable. I love that I can use my Bonfire all year round. (I’m already dreaming of sipping hot cocoa in the glow of Christmas lights!)

Do Solo Stoves burn a lot of wood?

Yes. Since the Solo Stove burns at a higher temperature than traditional fire pits, you may go through more wood in a single fire pit session. That said, I loved that every log burned down to just ash. In my traditional fire pit, I’m typically left with a few half-burned logs at the end of the night. The Bonfire burns more, but it does so cleanly and evenly, resulting in less waste.

What Other Reviewers Had to Say

I’m not the only one smitten with this fire pit. Over 15,000 Solo Stove Bonfire reviews sing its praises, yielding a near-perfect five-star rating.

“I did a lot of research comparing the top smokeless fire pits in the market and by far the Solo Stove was the most feature-rich for the price,” shares verified buyer Carlos G. “I have had my Bonfire for about a month now, 10 plus uses, and I can tell you that it does not disappoint.”

Five-star reviewer, Donald E., put the Bonfire’s stand to the test—with excellent results. “Before trying it out on our deck, we used some scrap leftovers to ensure our deck wouldn’t burn/melt. Happy to report that it didn’t even get warm! We are really going to enjoy summer/fall nights next to our Bonfire out on our deck!”

Taste of Home staffers are jumping on the Solo Stove bandwagon too. “I personally haven’t been very pleased with the inexpensive fire pit I purchased a couple of years ago,” shares Culinary Producer, Josh Rink. “When the opportunity presented itself to try the Solo Stove, I took it! My interest was rewarded with a very lovely evening sitting around a robust and warm fire visiting my family. The fire lit easily with just simple kindling. The flames grew quickly and rose and danced above the edge of the stove, just as seen in the advertisements.”

Product Comparison

When buying a Solo Stove, one of the most difficult choices you have to make is what size to order. All four options generally work the same, but each is designed for a different space.

The tabletop Mesa is great for apartment dwellers or anyone with a tiny yard. It sits directly on your patio table, yet still provides enough smokeless fire for warmth and toasting marshmallows. The Ranger is perfect for campers. Weighing just 15 pounds, it’s highly portable and fits practically anywhere you’re adventuring. And lastly, the Yukon is great for extra-large spaces. The 27-inch diameter provides plenty of real estate for gathering ’round.

Final Verdict

Based on this Solo Stove Bonfire review, it’s easy to see why it was named one of our Summer Essentials. This sleek outdoor accessory provides years of all-seasons use, and it fits in almost any backyard space. Plus, after experiencing a bonfire without smoke, ash and flying embers, it’s hard to imagine going back. I am officially a smokeless fire pit convert.

Where to Buy the Solo Stove Bonfire Fire Pit

Solo Stove Patio Shot With Chairs And Firewood

You can buy the Solo Stove Bonfire + Stand 2.0 from a variety of retailers, including Amazon, The Home Depot, BBQ Guys and directly from Solo Stove. The bundle retails for $470, but Solo Stove frequently offers markdowns.

And, if you know you want some Solo Stove accessories, opt for a bundle to save some cash. In addition to the Bonfire + Stand bundle, you can also order the Bonfire Essentials bundle, which includes the stand and the aforementioned lid. There’s also a Backyard bundle and an Ultimate bundle, both of which include a bevy of tools and add-ons.

If you’re ready to upgrade your outdoor space, I can’t recommend Solo Stove enough. They’re changing the backyard fire pit game for good.

We Ordered New York’s Most Famous Cookies—And Yes, They’re Worth the Hype https://www.tasteofhome.com/article/levain-cookies-delivery/ Wed, 12 Jul 2023 00:19:10 +0000 https://www.tasteofhome.com/?p=1900084 It doesn't get any sweeter than a Levain cookies delivery!

The post We Ordered New York’s Most Famous Cookies—And Yes, They’re Worth the Hype appeared first on Taste of Home.

]]>
As an avid home baker, I’ve spent countless hours (and used several pounds of butter) pursuing the perfect chocolate chip cookie. I’ve experimented with browning butter, chilling the dough, mixing types of chocolate—you name it. And while my efforts have certainly been sweet, I’ve never been blown away by a cookie.

I knew, however, that perfection was out there. In all my research, one name kept popping up as the crème de la crème of chocolate chip cookies: Levain. I knew I had to sample these mammoth morsels for myself. (And then spend the rest of my life creating a copycat recipe.) Luckily, I didn’t have to book a flight to New York to try them.

What are Levain cookies?

Levain Assorted Cookies in the package

Levain Bakery makes one of the most famous chocolate chip cookies in the world. What began as a humble bread shop on the Upper West Side of Manhattan quickly spiraled into a cultural phenomenon.

Now, it’s not the quirky flavor combos that make Levain cookies so special—it’s their outrageous size. Each treat weighs in at a whopping six ounces!

Levain crafts a handful of classic flavors, including seasonal options, but it’s the signature chocolate chip walnut cookie I was vying to try. If possible, of course, stop by one of over a dozen bakery locations, but Levain does offer nationwide shipping as well.

Why I Love Them

Levain Single Cookie With Milk

I was lucky enough to try both the Levain signature cookie assortment—which features the iconic chocolate chip walnut, dark chocolate chocolate chip, dark chocolate peanut butter chip and oatmeal raisin—and their caramel coconut chocolate chip cookies.

Both cookie four-packs arrived on my doorstep in perfect condition. Nary a loose crumb or crack in sight! The packaging was so cute, too, with a bright blue box and cellophane wrapping—complete with a pretty bow.

While I was eager to dig in right away, I decided to follow the brand’s care instructions. So, after a family dinner one night, I preheated the oven to 350 degrees and plopped the cookies on a baking sheet. They weren’t kidding about the size! Each one barely fit in the palm of my hand and was incredibly thick. I baked for about 8 minutes (Levain recommends 5-10) until warm and gooey in the center.

Then, finally, it was taste test time. I sectioned each cookie into fourths for easy sharing and poured a glass of milk.

My first sample was the caramel coconut chocolate chip cookies. They tasted like a Girl Scout Samoa cookie and a chocolate chip cookie had a baby. The result was warm and tender with crunchy flakes of coconut. As the cookie cooled, the caramel turned deliciously chewy and added an even deeper texture.

Next, I turned my attention to the dark chocolate peanut butter chip. Now, I’ll admit, I’m not the world’s biggest PB fan. I’ll enjoy a Reese’s cup now and again, but it’s typically not my favorite flavor profile. But man, this cookie changed my mind. It was an ideal balance between sweet and salty, and the dark chocolate was really dark, lending a deep, complex flavor that was more nuanced than I was expecting.

For round three, I picked up a bite of oatmeal raisin. I was confident that if anyone could elevate this old-fashioned flavor, it was Levain. Right away, I was impressed by this cookie’s texture. The oatmeal added heft without being too dense or dry, and the texture was somewhat like a scone. The real standouts were the juicy raisins. Yum!

Dark chocolate chocolate chip was intense. If you don’t love chocolate, this is not the cookie for you. The texture was slightly more cakelike than the others and tasted like a cookie-brownie hybrid. I loved the gooey chocolate chips in every bite. And, thanks to the extra-dark chocolate, the flavor wasn’t overwhelmingly sweet.

Finally, it was time to test the cookie I had been dreaming about for weeks: chocolate chip walnut. After one bite, I knew the hype was real. These cookies are truly perfect. They’re crispy around the edges, gooey in the center, studded with melty chocolate and crunchy walnuts. My journey for the best chocolate chip cookie was finally coming to a close.

Levain Cookie Cross Cut Levain Cookies Katie Bandurski Taste Of Home Jvedit

After this eye-opening (and sweet tooth-stretching) experience, I can confirm that Levain cookies are the real deal. I will certainly be ordering again, both for myself and my loved ones. The signature cookie assortment makes a delightful gift for any occasion—even “just because.”

Where to Buy Levain Cookies

Levian Cookie Assortment

You can buy Levain cookies directly from the bakery. Choose from 4-, 8- or 12-packs of individual flavors or assortments. The brand also offers gift tins and even a cookie club. Prices start at $29. Trust me when I say: You’ll never get a sweeter delivery.

Our holiday expert raves about this tree's form and function.

Anyone who’s met me can confirm: I love the holidays. No matter the season, I happily listen to carols, scour estate sales for vintage decor and daydream about my mom’s Christmas cookies. Here at Taste of Home, as Senior Shopping Editor, I focus my energies on uncovering the best gift ideas and testing the latest holiday gear.

At the top of my list? The Balsam Hill flip tree. I’ve been eyeing this impressive holiday beacon ever since I saw an ad for it during a Hallmark Christmas movie marathon. But I had to know: Is it really worth the hefty price tag? I tested it to find out.

What is a Balsam Hill flip tree?

We Tried It

Balsam Hill Flip Tree

The design has rich color, lifelike needles and easy setup in a variety of styles.

First things first—why is this tree so special? Well, as anyone who has ever owned an artificial Christmas tree can attest, setup is a pain. My typical routine involves lugging a very heavy box out of the basement, lifting each segment of the tree into place and fumbling around the branches to connect the lights. The whole ordeal takes over an hour and leaves me covered in plastic pine needle scratches.

The Balsam Hill Balsam Fir flip tree literally flips this holiday hullabaloo on its head. The tree smartly sits on caster wheels and effortlessly rolls into place. Then, to set it up, all you need to do is press the foot pedal, pull the tree stem toward you and voila! Gravity does the rest. A smart plug connection lets you drop the upper half of the tree into place, so all that’s left to do is plug it in and start decorating.

Balsam Hill Balsam Fir Flip Tree Features

  • Available in four heights: 6.5-, 7.5-, 9- and 10-foot options
  • Available in three light types: Clear, Candlelight Clear LED, Color + Clear LED (The 6.5-foot tree also has a Twinkly Light Show option.)
  • Features highly realistic “True Needle” branches and a full shape
  • Three-year warranty, including on lights
  • Built on a rolling metal stand for easy placement
  • Comes with durable, custom-fit canvas bags for streamlined storage
  • Includes fluffing gloves and troubleshooting kit

How We Tested It

I was sent the 7.5-foot Balsam Hill Balsam Fir flip tree with clear lights in April 2023. Since then, I have set up, decorated and taken down the tree multiple times.

Arrival and Unboxing

unboxing balsam tree in bag

The Balsam Hill flip tree was delivered to my porch, standing upright. It was a two-person effort to carry the 79-pound box up the set of stairs into my apartment. But once we got it inside, unboxing was easy. The flip tree comes in a special box that’s designed so you can simply roll out the base—again, no lifting required.

Both the flippable base and the top portion of the tree were also wrapped in their own custom storage bags. I’ve bought my fair share of Christmas trees, and typically this is an item you have to buy after the fact—and hope it fits. Balsam Hill includes them with your flip tree purchase. Right away I was impressed with this attention to detail. Taking down the Christmas tree is one of my most dreaded tasks, but knowing I have quality storage ready to go makes it a little more bearable.

Setting Up the Tree

Toh Balsam Hill Flip Tree Process katie Bandurski Toh Jvedit Update

After unboxing and removing the storage bags, it was finally time to test out the flip tree feature! I started by locking down the wheels to keep the tree steady. This was as simple as pressing the hinge on each of the four caster wheels.

Then, I simply pressed on the flip pedal and pulled the top of the tree trunk toward me. It immediately started to flip! I guided the trunk down slowly until I heard it click into place. Easy-peasy.

Next, I grabbed the top portion of the tree. For this step, all I needed to do was align the arrow on the base’s trunk with the arrow on the top’s trunk. Again, this was a breeze. And now I had a fully assembled tree. The whole process took maybe three minutes, and I could tackle it by myself. (Aka no more waiting for my fiancé to agree that it’s time to put up the Christmas tree.)

Before I could grab the ornaments, I needed to perform arguably the most important task when setting up an artificial Christmas tree: fluffing the branches. While it’s time-consuming, it guarantees that your tree will look its very best. Plus, Balsam Hill kindly includes two sets of gloves to protect your (and a helper’s!) hands from any poky needles.

Full instructions are available on Balsam Hill’s website, but the premise of fanning the branches is pretty simple. I also found that, because the flip tree uses the brand’s premier True Needle foliage, it required a little less shaping than traditional PVC branches.

Decorating the Tree

Toh Balsam Hill Flip Tree Set Up katie Bandurski Toh Jvedit Update

Drumroll, please! Once the flip tree was fluffed, I plugged it in. And, I know this sounds cheesy, but I audibly gasped. This was the most beautiful artificial tree I’ve ever seen. It was full, bright and covered in lights. (The 7.5-foot option I tested has over 6,375 branch tips and 1,150 lights, to be exact.) I also love that the lights are controlled through an easy-to-use remote.

To decorate the tree, I started by first hanging larger baubles. An expert holiday decorator taught me years ago that you should hang your biggest ornaments first, and ideally tuck them into the tree for a layered look. Bonus points if they’re reflective and will help mirror the glow of the lights. Since the Balsam Fir style of the flip tree is a little fuller than my previous tree, I wasn’t sure how many large ornaments I’d be able to hang. But I found plenty of space, even amongst the dense branches. Then, I moved on to medium and small ornaments to fill in the gaps.

Throughout the decorating process, I was continually impressed with each branch’s sturdiness. They supported the weight of even my bulkiest pieces. I also loved that there was a clear tip of the tree for securing my topper.

Taking Down the Tree

As with everything in life, all good things must come to an end. After enjoying my tree for a few days, it was time to take it down.

After removing the ornaments and unplugging the power adaptor from the wall, I simply lifted off the top and gently placed it in its bag. I then pressed on the base’s foot pedal and flipped it back toward me. Finally, I placed the base’s storage bag around the branches. After fluffing, the tree pieces are a little more difficult to wrangle into their respective bags. I was able to complete the process by myself, but it is easier with another set of hands.

Once everything was tucked away, I unlocked the caster wheels and rolled the tree into a spare closet. If you’re someone who relies on a basement or attic for holiday storage, keep this in mind as you’ll likely want to find a first-floor storage home for your tree.

Troubleshooting

Flip Tree Extra Fuses Katie Bandurski Jvedit 2 0

When I unboxed the Balsam Hill flip tree, I noticed a small bag attached to the base’s storage bag. It was a troubleshooting kit! In addition to the aforementioned fluffing gloves and remote, it included written instructions, extra bulbs and fuses, a replacement caster wheel and other upkeep tools. While it will hopefully be several years before I need to worry about updating burnt-out bulbs, I was impressed that Balsam Hill provided everything I needed to keep my tree in tip-top shape.

As someone who frequently questions the sustainability of real vs. artificial Christmas trees, it puts my mind at ease knowing I have the power to fix an issue rather than replace the entire tree.

Customer Service

For full transparency, the first flip tree I was sent had a defective flip mechanism. All it took, though, was a quick phone call to customer service. After a few minutes of troubleshooting, they decided to send me a new tree. The replacement arrived before I’d even had a chance to send back the defective one.

While of course, no one wants to have to reach out to customer service, defects do happen. And how a company responds to an issue is more important to me than a mistake. In my experience, Balsam Hill lives up to its reputation as having some of the best customer service support in the industry.

Flip Tree Options

Balsam Hill Flip Tree branch options

For a classic holiday look, I tested the Balsam Fir flip tree—but that’s far from the only option! Balsam Hill offers its convenient flip function in nine other styles:

Each tree is available in a variety of height and light options. And, if you’re not sure which tree style best suits your space, order a Balsam Hill branch sample kit. This handy box contains 10 or 25 tiny tree branches so you can get a firsthand feel for each choice. Then, once you’ve made a decision, the cost of the box applies to your tree purchase!

Pros

  • Incredibly easy to set up and take down
  • Stunning realism
  • Beautiful, bright lights
  • Wheels into place
  • Heirloom-status quality
  • Includes storage bags
  • Branches support ornaments of all shapes and sizes
  • Fix-it kit makes troubleshooting a breeze

FAQ

Flip Tree Pedal Katie Bandurski Jvedit 2 0

Are flip trees worth it?

As a seasoned holiday decorator, I vote yes. The tree’s quality and craftsmanship, plus Balsam Hill’s keen attention to detail, reassure me that my flip tree will last for years.

Do Balsam Hill trees wobble?

In my experience, no. I have uneven hardwood floors, and I found the Balsam Hill flip tree’s caster wheels to be sturdier than my traditional tree stand. The entire tree feels very secure.

What Other Reviewers Had to Say

With over 17,000 reviews and a 4.6 average star rating, I’m not the only one who thinks the Balsam Hill flip tree is full of holiday magic.

Verified buyer, Gma, is impressed with the tree’s easy setup. They write: “Got rid of my previous Balsam Hill tree after 12 years. It was still in really good shape, but I wanted a different tree going forward. I love the convenience of being able to set up my new tree in record time because of the flip feature.”

“Our old 9-foot tree took about an hour, three people and about a half box of Band-Aids,” shares five-star reviewer, E. Pate. “I put this beauty up in 10 minutes by myself and no Band-Aids. I love that there are plugs and wires everywhere and that I can change from multicolored to clear lights.”

“Beautiful,” exclaims verified buyer, Linda Christmas fanatic. “Tree is extremely simple to unpack and set up. We are in our late 70s and had no issues unpacking and setting up. Tree looks beautiful and can’t wait for next Christmas to decorate.”

Final Verdict

If you’re in the market for a new Christmas tree, I can’t speak more highly of the Balsam Hill flip tree. Yes, it’s an investment. But it’s one that you will enjoy for many holiday seasons. Plus, the setup does not get any easier. This tree simplifies one of the most stressful parts of holiday decorating. (I’m already planning to buy one for my aging parents who struggle with their bulky traditional tree.)

Pick up the Balsam Hill Balsam Fir flip tree on the brand’s website and a few other retailers. My 7.5-foot tree with clear lights retails for $1,799. Other style, size and light options range from $1,399 to $4,399. While these prices are certainly on the high end, keep in mind that Balsam Hill does offer frequent sales. Not to mention, can you really put a price on holiday magic?

As a home chef, I’ve spent a lot of time in the kitchen. And as Taste of Home’s Senior Shopping Editor, I’ve spent even more time researching, testing and writing about the latest gear. I’ve tried almost every type of cookware—from cast iron and ceramic to nonstick and stainless steel.

And, after years of searching, I’ve finally found my Goldilocks pan. It’s not too heavy or fussy, it cooks beautifully and it’s truly nonstick. Say hello to the HexClad Dutch oven.

What is the HexClad Dutch oven?

Hexclad Dutch Oven in the oven

With a 5-quart capacity, the HexClad Dutch oven is an ideal size for searing, braising, boiling, simmering or baking nearly anything the heart desires. It’s one of many pretty pans that lives up to the hype. Like all HexClad cookware, it features the brand’s signature hybrid design. This surface, made up of steel ridges and nonstick valleys, helps you sear without sticking. It’s truly one of a kind!

The Dutch oven is also safe to use on gas, electric and induction cooktops. Plus, it can withstand oven temps of up to 500 degrees. Other benefits include its light(er) weight and dishwasher-safe construction.

  • Measures roughly 7 inches wide x 12 inches high
  • Weighs just under 4 pounds
  • Oven-safe up to 500 degrees
  • Dishwasher-safe
  • Lifetime warranty

How I Tested It

I’ve used the HexClad Dutch oven as part of my day-to-day cookware rotation since February 2023. From the packaging alone, I could tell that this beauty was special.

Admittedly it’s not as flashy as other trendy pans—like Caraway cookware or the Always Pan—but it’s still eye-catching. The stainless steel exterior is sleek, while the interior hexagonal surface is unlike any pan I’ve seen before. After a quick wash, it was time to get cooking!

The Stovetop Test: Seared Tofu

Hexclad pan after removing cooked tofu from the pan

For my first test, I wanted to see how the HexClad could handle the bane of my cooking existence: tofu. I’ve been a vegetarian for over a decade and still struggle with this finicky protein. Almost every time I pan-fry tofu, it sticks to the bottom, no matter how much oil I use. I often give up halfway through cooking and turn my neat slices into a tofu scramble.

To start, I patted the tofu dry to remove excess moisture and preheated the Dutch oven over medium heat. I added a thin, even layer of oil to the bottom, then nestled in the slices. The Dutch oven holds a pound of tofu comfortably. I opted to cook it without seasonings or marinades to test the HexClad’s capabilities.

Right away, I was hopeful. The slices slid around the pan with just a touch of my tongs. And when it came time to flip, I was rewarded with a crisp, golden brown crust. No stuck-on bits at all. Even after five more minutes of cooking, the tofu still glided around the pan with ease. I can easily say these were the best (and most intact!) tofu slices I’ve ever cooked. After just one test, HexClad had me hooked.

The Oven Test: Dutch Oven Bread

Bread in Hexclad Dutch Oven

Next, I wanted to test the pan’s oven-proof capabilities. I whipped up a batch of our Test Kitchen’s Dutch oven bread and got to work. Once my dough had a chance to rest, I preheated the Dutch oven (with the lid on) at 450 degrees for half an hour. This step ensures that, when you go to add your loaf, it creates steam. AKA the secret to a delicious, crackly crust.

Right away, I was impressed with how much easier it is to wrangle the lightweight HexClad over my cast iron or ceramic Dutch oven. I don’t typically mind the extra weight when stovetop cooking. But when lifting a piping hot vessel out of the oven, the lighter, the better!

After shaping and scoring my loaf, I nestled the Dutch oven with parchment paper, put the lid back on and let the oven work its magic. After half an hour, it was time to remove the lid and let the crust brown even further.

Finally, after 20 long minutes of existing in the same space as a baking loaf of bread, it was time to taste. My first thought was: Why do I ever buy bread? My second was: Wow—this is amazing. It took a lot of self-control for me and my partner to not devour the entire loaf in one sitting.

Honestly, this bread alone is reason enough to buy the HexClad Dutch oven. It cooked the loaf to perfection (without any kneading!) and was effortless to lift in and out of the oven. Plus, if it saves me from spending $5 on an artisan loaf every week—well, that’s just the icing, err, butter, on top!

Six-Month Update

I’ve used the HexClad Dutch oven for over six months. In addition to baking bread and searing tofu, I’ve also: boiled water for pasta, seared dumplings, browned a veggie burger, simmered soup, stirred Rice Krispies treats, sauted veggies, caramelized onions, toasted buns—you get the picture. It’s truly one of the most versatile pieces of cookware I’ve ever owned. So much so that if I ever had to pare down my cookware to just one pan, the HexClad Dutch oven is the piece I’d choose.

Plus, even after several months of consistent use, it’s barely showing signs of wear. The lid fits beautifully without any warping or loose screws. The exterior is a little grubby, but that’s only because I’m too lazy to polish the stainless steel. And the interior is still delightfully nonstick—even when tackling messy cooking tasks. (Looking at you, sticky cauliflower gnocchi!) As we head into fall and winter, I’m already dreaming of all the big-batch soups, chilis and pastas I’ll cook with ease.

Pros

  • Nonstick hybrid cooking surface
  • Works for a variety of cooking tasks, including braising, searing, boiling, simmering and sauteing
  • Oven-safe up to 500 degrees
  • Lightweight, especially compared to cast iron
  • Includes a lid
  • Safe to use with metal utensils
  • Works with a variety of cooktop types, including induction
  • Dishwasher-safe
  • Endorsed by professional chef, Gordon Ramsay

Cons

  • On the pricey side (unless you buy during a HexClad sale!)
  • Only available in stainless steel

FAQ

Close Up of HexClad

Is HexClad really scratch-proof?

Yes! You can use metal utensils without worry. I’ve had my Dutch oven for several months, and there’s nary a scratch. That said, avoid using any extra-sharp tools directly against the cookware, such as a knife.

How long will HexClad last?

Only time will tell, but HexClad’s hybrid design is tougher than most nonstick cookware coatings. Plus, the brand offers a lifetime warranty against manufacturer’s defects.

What Other Reviewers Had to Say

We’re not the only ones upgrading to HexClad cookware. While still fairly new to the market, the Dutch oven has a near-perfect 4.9-star rating on Amazon.

“We are totally thrilled with our HexClad cookware,” shares verified purchaser, Circuits. “It heats quickly and it cleans up so easily. You can just wipe it out with a paper towel and it looks like new. Eggs don’t stick, cheese doesn’t stick and everything cooks very evenly. I know these are expensive, but you won’t regret treating yourself to the luxury of cooking with HexClad!”

Reviewer Mark Lienau gives high praise, stating: “These really are the Rolls Royce of pans. Best pans I have ever owned. I am 73 and I expect that these are the last pans I’ll ever buy.”

One Amazon customer is a HexClad diehard, saying: “I have almost every piece including the knives. I’m a home cook and rarely eat out. Everything scratch-made. I have washed by hand, put in the dishwasher and they all still look new. Excellent cooking pots and pans. I soak them if anything sticks and they clean right up. No fuss.”

Product Comparison

When it comes to Dutch ovens, HexClad is in good company. I’ve personally worked with two other stalwarts on the market: Le Creuset’s enameled cast iron and Caraway’s ceramic Dutch oven. They are all excellent pieces of cookware, and the pros vs. cons come down to personal preference. In my kitchen, HexClad is the clear winner. Here’s why:

Compared to Le Creuset’s, the HexClad Dutch oven is much lighter. There’s a weight difference of over 7 pounds, and that’s before the Dutch oven is even filled with food. With HexClad, I feel more confident transferring a boiling stew to the table or lifting piping hot bread out of the oven. That said, Le Creuset offers a rainbow of beautiful colors that are hard to beat.

Compared to Caraway, I appreciate HexClad’s versatility. Again, I use both of these pans on the regular. But with Caraway, I need to avoid high heat and metal utensils to preserve the nonstick coating. With HexClad, I don’t have to worry as much.

Final Verdict

I am officially a HexClad convert. (Seriously—the rest of their pots, pans and gear are going on my wedding registry, stat.) I love the pan’s smart, nonstick design and versatility. It’s the vessel I reach for almost every night!

This Dutch oven blends versatility with impressive nonstick performance—all while staying lightweight and sleek. In a competitive cookware market, HexClad stands out and earns my stamp of approval. (For more, read all about the differences between HexClad and All-Clad.)

Cometeer Coffee Review: We Tried Coffee Capsules for the Easiest Morning Ever https://www.tasteofhome.com/article/cometeer-coffee-review/ Tue, 16 May 2023 18:11:47 +0000 https://www.tasteofhome.com/?p=1884997 Cometeer capsules are changing my morning coffee routine for the better.

The post Cometeer Coffee Review: We Tried Coffee Capsules for the Easiest Morning Ever appeared first on Taste of Home.

]]>
Some mornings, my laziness gets the best of my coffee routine. Often, it’s because my pour-over or espresso portafilter is still dirty in the sink from yesterday morning. And I don’t have the time or energy to clean them until, well, I’ve had a cup of coffee. See the problem?

Usually, I would just power through. (Or ask my fiancé to walk down the block to a café.) But then I learned about Cometeer coffee capsules. These pods are changing the instant coffee game—but do they live up to the hype? Here’s my honest review.

What is Cometeer coffee?

Cometeer coffee merges the quality of a barista-crafted cup with the simplicity of instant coffee. The brand’s capsules are filled with expertly brewed, super-strong coffee concentrate, then frozen. The cups stay frozen until you’re ready to indulge.

To use Cometeer coffee, you have several options. For a classic cup of hot coffee, remove the still-frozen cup from its packaging and add 6-8 ounces of hot water. Or, “brew” it through a single-serve coffee maker. And for a speedy latte, add a melted coffee capsule to your steamed milk of choice.

If iced coffee is more your style, Cometeer tastes equally good when a melted capsule mixes with cold water, milk or ice. Heck, you can even serve ’em over ice cream for an on-the-go affogato or mix with vodka for an espresso martini. The options are endless.

As an added bonus, cleanup is a breeze. There are no messy grounds to compost or tiny espresso baskets to wash. Simply rinse the aluminum capsule housing and toss it in the recycling bin. Talk about a win for you and the planet.

How We Tested It

Making Iced Coffee Up Close Of Capsule Cometeer Coffee Katie Bandurski

I had the chance to try four varieties of Cometeer coffee capsules:

They arrived neatly on my porch, packed in dry ice. Right off the bat, I loved that this coffee product does not take up additional counter space in my kitchen. As someone who owns several coffee makers and accessories, this is a major perk!

I popped the four boxes into my freezer until it was coffee time. (Which, in my eagerness to try, was just a few hours later.)

I took note of the included instructions card and decided on a simple hot coffee. I put the kettle on, filled it with filtered water from my LARQ pitcher and set it to boil. Then, I prepped my capsule by running it under warm water. After just a few seconds I could feel it start to loosen, so I ripped off the lid and tipped it right into my favorite mug. When the water came to a boil, I added about six ounces and gave the mixture a stir.

The coffee concentrate dissolved almost instantly. Plus, the cold capsule cooled the coffee to the perfect drinking temperature. The whole process, from start to finish, took less than five minutes. And most of that time was waiting for the water to boil!

On first sip, I was pleasantly surprised. This cup could have come from a coffee shop. It was rich, bodied and had a nuanced flavor I would never expect from near-instant coffee. My first thought was, “wow, this really does live up to the brand’s ‘having a barista in your freezer’ marketing claims.” I also love that you can add as little or as much water as you’d like to achieve your ideal brew strength.

For my next test, I had to wait until Wisconsin weather cooperated and sent a sunny, warm day my way. When the clouds finally lifted, I knew it was time to try an iced coffee.

To melt, I simply put my coffee capsule on the counter for an hour. You can also stash it in the fridge overnight or run it under warm water. Remember, though, that the housing is made of aluminum, so you can not defrost in the microwave.

After that, it’s as simple as pouring over ice and milk. I chose to also add a splash of my favorite vanilla coffee syrup. One quick stir later, I took a sip. And, once again, I was impressed. While the lattes I make with my espresso machine have a bolder flavor, this makeshift version was pretty similar. It’s the ideal afternoon pick-me-up when you’re running short on time. And the best part? No dishes to wash!

Pros

  • Quick and easy to prepare
  • Freshly brewed flavor
  • Versatile uses
  • Sustainable packaging
  • Portable
  • Ability to try new roasts and roasters
  • Don’t take up space on your counter, just in the freezer
  • Easy to customize to your preferred brew strength

Cons

  • On the pricey side

FAQ

Making Iced Coffee Final Cometeer Coffee Katie Bandurski

Is Cometeer coffee expensive?

Compared to a bag of grocery store grounds or a pack of instant coffee, yes, Cometeer capsules are on the pricey side. However, when you factor in the gourmet beans and expert roasting, similar to what you pay for in a coffee shop, the pods could actually save you money. See ya later, $6 latte!

Can you use Cometeer in Keurig?

Yes! Simply give the capsule a quick shake, then insert frozen into your Keurig coffee maker. Select the 8-ounce brew setting and enjoy! Keep in mind that you don’t need a Keurig to brew Cometeer capsules though. You can use kettle-boiled water, steamed milk or ice just as well.

Final Verdict

Now, I’ll admit, while I appreciate a good cup of coffee, I do not have the palate of a Q Grader (aka a coffee sommelier). If you, too, appreciate a quality morning cup and convenience, I highly recommend Cometeer coffee. Is it the fanciest brew in the world? No. But is it tasty and easy to make? Yes.

Plus, it lets you try different types of coffee from roasters across the country. I also love the versatility. As someone who likes to switch between hot brews, lattes, iced coffee, cold brew and even mushroom coffee, Cometeer gives me the flexibility to satisfy any craving.

Where to Buy Cometeer Coffee

Cometeer Coffee Box Ecomm

You can buy Cometeer coffee capsules on the brand’s website. Opt between a one-time buy for around $90 or subscribe for around $70. (For the latter, choose to receive deliveries every week, two weeks or four weeks.) One order includes 32 capsules, customized to your preferred roast level or roaster. For an extra $17, you can also add on 8-packs of decaf, half-caff or a “barista’s choice.”

It’s official: lazy mornings will never be the same. And honestly? Reaching for a capsule may just become my new normal.

The post Our Senior Shopping Editor Says This Coveted Le Creuset Set Is the Best Way Day Find appeared first on Taste of Home.

Wayfair’s Way Day is finally here—and that means huge savings on all the best cookware sets, home decor and cordless vacuums. The anticipated two-day event begins on April 26, and shopping editors are already adding wishlist items to our carts in preparation. While there are hundreds of deals to sift through on the Way Day sale page, I have my eyes fixed firmly on one find: the Le Creuset cast iron set.

What is the Le Creuset cast iron set?

In my opinion, no kitchen is complete without a few trusty pieces of cast iron cookware. No one makes sturdier (or more beautiful) pots and pans than Le Creuset. This five-piece enameled set features a 5.5-quart lidded Dutch oven, a 1.75-quart lidded saucepan and a nine-inch skillet. I’m smitten with the trendy Artichaut colorway, but there are ample options for every kitchen style.

Why I Love It

Le Creuset sales are always worth shopping, especially when the discounts are as high as 30%. Shoppers can’t go wrong with this set—especially since Le Creuset items use heirloom-quality materials. These built-to-last pots and pans sear up the crispiest pan-fried chicken thighs thanks to the stick-free porcelain enamel surface.

Another hallmark of the set is the ease of cleanup. Unlike other cast iron pans, the Le Creuset cast iron set doesn’t require seasoning. Plus, it’s dishwasher safe—talk about low maintenance. Each piece resists dulling, staining, chipping and cracking thanks to durable materials. Because of the ergonomic handles, the pots are easy to move from the cooktop to the oven or table.

What Reviewers Say

From the matte navy collection to new spring shades, home chefs and cooking newbies alike adore Le Creuset pots and pans. Reviewers praise the longevity and beauty of each piece, with some noting that they purchased the set to replace decades-old Le Creuset pots they inherited from grandparents.

Verified buyer Taylor writes, “Carpe Diem! That’s the thought I have after taking the first bite of breakfast I make each morning for my wife and I. The younger generation, which I am, wasn’t taught to buy quality. The regular trip to Wally World to spend $60 on a set of cookware was a ritual. After a few months, the bottom of the pans are scratched off and warped due to poor quality. Absolutely unusable.

Le Creuset has been delivering heirloom cookware for almost 100 years. This is ultra-high-quality cookware that you do not need to baby. No more chemical burning smells from Chinese manufactured pots and pans. Use on any type of stovetop or even outside over coals. With a lifetime warranty, you will spend less on a nice set of Le Creuset vs. the brick-and-mortar offerings.

Using the financing option offered through Wayfair is a great option as well. After spending $60 on pizza a few nights a week for the family, I was fed up and purchased this five-piece set in the OG Flame color. Shipping was fast! Virtually overnight I turned into Emeril Lagasse. I can’t wait to cook these days.”

Where can I buy the Le Creuset cast iron set?

Le Creuset Cast Iron Three Piece Set

As mentioned in our Wayfair shopping guide, Way Day is the Black Friday of spring shopping. While the Le Creuset cast iron set normally retails for over $800, a 30% discount slashes nearly $250 off this versatile assortment of cookware. Hurry, though—certain colors are already sold out, and it won’t be long before they’re all gone.

This Decadent Cocoa Powder Is the Secret to Better Brownies https://www.tasteofhome.com/article/valrhona-cocoa-powder/ Mon, 24 Apr 2023 13:48:46 +0000 https://www.tasteofhome.com/?p=1876795 Want to take your brownies to the next level with just one simple swap? As an avid baker, I’m always on the hunt for gourmet ingredients that take my recipes to the next level. I’ve fallen head over heels for flavor-packed vanilla bean paste, sweet Luxardo cherries, creamy Irish butter—you name it.

So, when our Test Kitchen pros couldn’t stop raving about Valrhona cocoa powder, I knew I needed to add it to my Amazon cart ASAP. But at $18 a container—more than three times what I’m used to paying for a carton of cocoa—could it really live up to they hype? Here’s what I found out.

What is Valrhona cocoa powder?

Valrhona cocoa powder container, cocoa powder in a bowl, and a few brownies

Marketed as “the partner of chefs,” Valrhona cocoa powder is made in France. It features a deep, reddish brown hue and is suitable for baked goods, chocolate confections and hot cocoa. The flavor is rich and nuanced, yet not bitter. Each 8.8-ounce carton contains 36 servings and, thanks to the cocoa’s intense flavor, a little bit goes a long way.

Why I Love It

grocery store cocoa powder in a bowl and the brownies made with it next to the valrhona cocoa powder in a bowl with the brownies made with it

In the name of my sweet tooth (and science), I whipped up two batches of Taste of Home’s Best Fudgy Brownies. One batch featured run-of-the-mill grocery store cocoa and the other used Valrhona.

Right away, I noticed a distinct difference in color. The grocery store cocoa yielded a pale, milk chocolate-covered batter while the Valrhona created a much darker batter. The latter also had a rich, chocolaty smell that made it hard to resist digging into the raw dough.

Once baked and (let’s be honest, slightly) cooled, it was time for a taste test. I started with the control batch made with grocery store cocoa powder. Don’t get me wrong, they were good. After all, they’re still brownies!

But the Valrhona batch made me reconsider everything I thought I knew about baking with cocoa powder. These were intensely chocolatyrich and deep with a luxurious flavor. They were definitely on the darker side, but without a hint of bitterness. The Valrhona brownies reminded me of the flavor profile you get when adding espresso powder or brewed coffee to chocolate desserts, but without the extra step!

It should come as no surprise that I’m officially a Valrhona cocoa powder convert. I’m eager to whip up some other treats, including Ina Garten’s chocolate cake and homemade hot cocoa. A carton would also make a lovely gift for bakers.

But Don’t Take My Word for It!

I’m not the only one who can’t get enough of Valrhona’s rich, complex flavor.

“This cocoa is the best cocoa I have ever tasted,” shares 5-star Amazon reviewer, Larry. “It is rich, deliciously smooth and worth the wait…You will not be disappointed in the quality and taste of this dark, rich, delectable chocolate.”

As previously mentioned, our Test Kitchen pros are smitten. They gave Valrhona the title of “best splurge” in their best cocoa powder tests. “This cocoa is velvety and has a nearly creamy mouthfeel when stirred into hot chocolate,” they say. “This deep-hued cocoa also has a terrific complexity of flavor; it’s not just plain ol’ chocolate, it’s chocolate that has subtle dark cocoa notes and some brightness that makes your tastebuds take notice.”

Where to Buy Valrhona Cocoa Powder

You can pick up Valrhona cocoa powder on Amazon for $18, and it’s also available at Sur La Table for $14.50. After one chocolaty taste, you’ll be hooked!

Learning a new craft is daunting. Between investing in materials and slogging through poorly written instructions, it’s tempting to give up before you’ve even tried. Luckily, there’s an easier way—at least for budding crocheters.

Say hello to The Woobles! These cute, cuddly craft kits let you skip spending an hour in the yarn aisle. They provide everything you need to start crocheting in one beginner-friendly package.

What are The Woobles?

The Woobles Crochet Kits

The Woobles are like meal kits for crafters. They offer all the materials you need—yarn, a crochet hook, stuffing, eyes, needle and thread—to create your very own knit animal friend. Choose from a variety of adorable patterns, including a penguin, fox and unicorn.

What truly sets Woobles crochet kits apart are the video tutorials. Each step of the crochet process breaks down into micro-steps the length of TikTok reels. They cover every step of the process, from learning how to hold your yarn to reading patterns. And if you mess up? The Woobles crochet support team is just an email or chat away. Kits are available for both beginner and intermediate skill sets, and are suitable for ages 12 and up. (Shop for younger artists with our craft kits for kids.)

How to Use The Woobles

I’ve dabbled in a handful of crafts, like counted cross-stitch and needle felting, but never crochet. That’s why when given the chance to try The Woobles, I was eager to see if these kits are truly beginner-friendly.

I sat down with my Pierre the Penguin kit and was immediately impressed by the quality of the supplies. Woobles prides itself on its “easy-peasy” yarn. The texture is difficult to describe, but it has almost a jersey knit feel. It’s smooth, stretchy and doesn’t unravel if you need to undo a few stitches. Plus, your crochet piece comes pre-started. As any crafter can tell you, casting on is typically the most difficult part. A small round of completed stitches lets you jump right in to learning the fun stuff.

Crocheting Pierre took some time, but the process was smooth. Any time I got lost in the pattern or needed a reminder, the video steps had my back. I also appreciate that, while beginner-friendly, The Woobles crochet kits offer a challenge. You learn so many new skills while crafting your piece, like mastering different types of stitches, reading a pattern and crafting a magic loop. I feel much more confident in my abilities than if I’d started with a basic potholder or scarf.

Woobles Crochet Kit finished product Pierre the Penguin being held in a person's hand with a white brick wall background

All in all, my Pierre isn’t perfect. He’s a little lumpy and my stitches are way too tight. But that’s OK! Each Woobles is as unique as its maker. Plus, with so many fun kits to choose from, I’ll get plenty of practice making Fred the Dinosaur or Bjorn the Narwhal. Pretty soon I’ll have an entire army of crocheted friends to display on my bookcase or give as gifts.

The Best User Reviews

We’re not the only ones smitten with The Woobles. Plenty of happy crafters share the kits’ ease of use and expertise.

“I am not a naturally crafty or artsy person, and I’ve tried various craft kits over the years with limited success…My mom sent me some of these kits in a care package and I had a blast working on them,” writes five-star reviewer, M.J. “I love how the videos are broken down into short clips that are easy to repeat and pay attention to. It made working through the steps easy to follow and, if I forgot something, it was easy to find the short clip to refresh instead of having to rewind through a long video.”

“I can’t believe this worked!” shares five-star reviewer, J.F. “I have tried and failed so many times with yarn crafts. I just couldn’t seem to get the hang of it. But somehow these video tutorials and easy-to-follow patterns actually taught me how to crochet! I’ve made five beginner Woobles and I just finished an intermediate Wooble today! I’m so hooked (pun intended)!”

I have a confession: I hate my pantry. It’s deep, it’s crowded and I oftentimes have to pull out several packages to see if I have any quinoa hiding in the back. It’s not functional and, truthfully, it can make cooking a chore.

Yes! Mason jars are excellent storage containers, especially when outfitted with airtight lids. The sturdy, non-porous glass is ideal for holding baking supplies, snacks, dry goods and other essentials. Plus, from a health standpoint, glass is preferable to plastic as it doesn’t contain Bisphenol A (BPA) or chemicals.

That being said, glass isn’t perfect. Mason jar storage containers are typically heavier than their plastic counterparts—and they’re breakable. If you have young kiddos who like to help themselves to an after-school snack, this may not be the best material.

Pros

  • Aesthetic
  • Healthy glass storage
  • Minimized risk of pantry pests
  • Airtight seals keep food fresh
  • Easy to see exactly what you have on hand
  • Wide range of sizes
  • Stackable

Cons

  • Cannot lift by the lid
  • Heavy
  • Breakable
  • Not very child-safe

How to Organize Your Pantry with Mason Jars

Tools and Supplies

  • Assorted mason jars: You’ll need an assortment of mason jars for this project. I recommend opting for jars in a wide variety of sizes and configurations, such as:
    • Stack and store jars: As you might garner from its name, this three-pack set stacks for easy storage. You can also pick up the jars individually in 16-cup, 9.9-cup and 4-cup sizes.
    • Storage latch jars: This three-pack set stacks, and it features a latch for tighter storage.
    • Quart jars: Not too big, not too small, quart jars are just the right size for many pantry staples.
    • Pint jars: They’re one of the smallest options. In fact, you may already have pint jars leftover from canning season!
  • Air-tight lids: If you opt for pint or quart mason jars, swap out the metal closures for wooden storage lids. This mason jar accessory provides an airtight seal, and is easier to access than the traditional screw-off lids.
  • Pantry labels: These are not necessary, but they certainly pack a beautiful punch! Pantry labels also make it simple to differentiate between similar items in storage. Oh, and if they look familiar, you’ve likely seen pantry labels on TikTok.
  • Lazy Susans: For deep cupboards, a lazy Susan is the ideal solution. Not only do they fit smaller mason jars, but they’re so easy to use. A quick spin provides access to everything on the shelf! If you need a different size, check out these other lazy Susan options.
  • Tiered organizers: You won’t be able to store every pantry essential in a mason jar. Maximize your space for canned goods, bottles and more with a tiered organizer or two.

Directions

pantry organized with ball jars and labels

Step 1: Wash and Dry the Mason Jars

The first step is by far the most tedious. Before you begin, wash and dry the mason jars. Depending on the size of your pantry, this can be quite a task.

I bathed over 25 jars and lids in warm, soapy water. (You could also run them through the dishwasher.) Then, each piece got a thorough wipe with towels. For the lids, I even removed the rubber gasket seals to ensure no water got trapped behind. You want to make sure each jar is completely dry before starting, otherwise you risk spoiling your dry goods with moisture. A podcast or good playlist helps the time pass!

Step 2: Configure the Layout

Next, you’ll need to spend a little time determining where to put the jars. For my cooking needs—and because my pantry space is broken up between several cupboards—I chose to group like things together. That means baking ingredients, like flour, sugar, baking soda and chocolate chips, went in one space, while rice, pasta, quinoa and other grains went in another.

It took a little mixing and matching to achieve a layout I was satisfied with. I needed to make sure all of my jars were accessible, and that items I use daily got the prime spots. Since my pantry is on the small side, I also leaned on lazy Susans and tiered organizers to maximize my available space.

If like things together isn’t your style, you could also organize by:

  • Alphabet: Arrange your ingredients from A to Z. This setup works best if all of the jars are the same size. Otherwise, a tiny jar of saffron may get lost next to your extra-large container of sugar.
  • Color: Pantry aesthetics? Yes, please! This option works with jars of all shapes and sizes. Keep in mind that, depending on the foods you buy, this option may not be quite as Instagram-ready as you think, though. A lot of classic pantry staples, like grains, sugars and flours, typically have a beige hue, which can end up looking blah. Just make sure you have a rainbow of pantry goods before you organize with this option.
  • Size: A scaling pantry—with larger jars on the bottom, medium jars in the middle and smaller jars at the top—makes quite the visual impact. Plus, it’s practical. The bulkiest, heaviest jars will be easiest to reach.

Step 3: Add Pantry Labels (Optional)

This step is optional, but it really takes your pantry organization to the next level. If desired, use a set of stick-on pantry labels to, well, label your jars.

You can absolutely do this step once the jars are filled, but keep in mind that they’ll be heavier and more awkward to maneuver.

Step 4: Fill the Mason Jars

Finally—it’s time to fill! I recommend putting down a few sheets of paper towels to protect your floors from any spills. Then, grab your pantry goods and start transferring.

For some foods, you may have leftovers that don’t quite fit in the jar. (Looking at you 5-pound bag of flour.) If that’s the case, consider grouping all of these odds and ends in a pantry storage container you can easily access when it’s time to refill. If you find yourself having a lot of leftovers, re-evaluate the layout and size of your jars, then make adjustments so more staples can fit in their entirety. There’s no sense in storing everything twice.

Step 5: Restock the Pantry

Once your jars are labeled and filled, place them in your pantry according to the layout you set up in step two, and voilà! You now have a beautifully organized pantry full of mason jar storage.

Oh, and if you want to go the extra mile, learn how to organize potatoes, onions and garlic. Then, take a stab at organizing your spices. Right this way for more kitchen organization ideas!

Thanksgiving can be a multi-day cooking marathon. All the planning often centers around the main event—that giant, glistening turkey. Once you decide where to buy it from, we’ll help you figure out what size turkey to buy and how long it needs to roast so you can plan your perfect holiday.

Learn how to cook a turkey with help from our Test Kitchen.

Tips for Cooking a Turkey

Before you nail down your Thanksgiving game plan, don’t forget to factor in these time-consuming steps.

  1. Defrost: Thawing a turkey can take anywhere from three to five days. So if you’ve bought a frozen turkey, be sure it is placed in the refrigerator with plenty of time to thaw.
  2. Preheat the oven: Set aside 15 to 20 minutes to allow your oven to thoroughly preheat. Since many home ovens heat unevenly, it’s a good idea to let your oven come up to temperature, then wait 5 to 10 more minutes before placing the turkey inside. This allows the heat to evenly disperse in the oven before you open the door. It is also a good idea to rotate your turkey at least every hour to help everything cook evenly.
  3. Season the turkey: The day before Thanksgiving, remove the bird from its packaging and take out the giblets. Then, massage kosher salt all over the turkey. Return the bird to the fridge until it’s ready to roast on the big day. This technique not only seasons the meat, it also helps to draw out excess moisture from the skin that, once baked, will be nice and crispy.
  4. Don’t baste: Basting requires you to open the oven door, which lets heat out and cools the surface of your bird. Every time you baste, you’re increasing the overall cooking time of your turkey. And more time in the oven leads to dry, tough meat.
  5. Stuffing a turkey: Our Taste of Home Test Kitchen recommends that you don’t stuff your turkey. The main reason is due to food safety. Cooking stuffing in the cavity of your turkey means there is more of a risk of getting foodborne illnesses like salmonella or E. coli. This exposure to bacteria can happen if the stuffing has not reached a safe temperature of 165°F—something that’s hard to do without overcooking the turkey.
  6. Rest: Finally, allow the turkey to rest for at least 30 minutes before you carve it. Resting lets the meat cool slightly and reabsorb juices that were bubbling to the surface in the hot oven. This reabsorption is what gives you plump, tender meat. If you carve the turkey right away, you lose all that tenderness in a puddle on your cutting board or plate!

How Long to Roast a Turkey?

Use this chart to figure out how long to cook a turkey (unstuffed) in a 325° oven, according to its size.

Editor’s Tip: Note that if you have stuffed your turkey, the stuffing inside must reach a safe temperature of 165°. This might result in the breast and thighs of your turkey reaching 180° to 185°—a sign that you might be eating a pretty dry bird for dinner.

Turkey Weight
Cooking Time
Doneness Temperature
4-6 lb. breast 1 hr 30 mins–2 hrs 15 mins 165°F
6-8 lb. breast 2 hrs 15 mins–3 hrs 15 mins 165°F
8-12 lbs. 2 hrs 45 mins–3 hrs 170-175°F
12-14 lbs. 3 hrs–3 hrs 45 mins 170-175°F
14-18 lbs. 3 hrs 45 mins–4 hrs 15 mins 170-175°F
18-20 lbs. 4 hrs 15 mins–4 hrs 30 mins 170-175°F
20-24 lbs. 4 hrs 30 mins–5 hrs 170-175°F

How to Check the Temperature of a Turkey

To find out if your turkey is fully cooked, insert a meat thermometer into the meatiest, thickest part of the bird (typically the thighs). You’re aiming for 170º to 175º for a whole bird and 165º for a turkey breast.

When taking the temperature, make sure that the thermometer doesn’t touch any bone, as this can give a false high reading and leave you with undercooked (read: unsafe) meat. And, if the meat isn’t to temperature, make sure you wash the probe of the thermometer in hot, soapy water before testing the turkey again.

Test Kitchen Tip: In the market for a meat thermometer? Our Test Kitchen recommends the top-of-the-line Thermapen Mk4 thermometer for its accuracy and easy-to-read display. We also like the colorful ThermoPop. Whatever you do, don’t rely on your turkey’s pop-up timer. Many times they pop too late—if they even pop at all—leading to a dry, overcooked bird.

What Temperature to Cook a Turkey

Our Test Kitchen recommends roasting a turkey at a steady 325º for the entire cook time. This temperature is low enough that you don’t need to worry about moisture evaporating quickly and drying out the turkey, but it’s also warm enough to cook the bird all the way through at a quick pace. Before the big day, be sure to check if your oven is working properly.

How Long to Cook a Turkey per Pound

The general rule is 15 to 20 minutes per pound of turkey when cooking an unstuffed turkey. If family tradition calls for roasting a stuffed turkey, though, try cooking it according to the chart above based on its size. Once your thermometer reads 165° in the breast or 175° in the thigh, take the temperature of the stuffing. If it doesn’t reach 165°, rather than drying out your turkey by cooking it longer, try scooping out the stuffing and microwaving it until it reaches the appropriate temperature.

If you opt to cook an unstuffed turkey, don’t worry, you can bake one of these crowd-pleasing stuffing recipes in a separate dish that will be just as tasty (and safe to eat!).

What Size Turkey to Buy

People hosting their first Thanksgiving often wonder how much turkey per person? You’ll need one pound of turkey per guest. When you can’t find the magical 12 pound turkey for 12 guests, just round up! It’s better to have too much food than to run short on the signature dish of Thanksgiving.

If you’re serving a hungry bunch or you really want to eat leftover turkey for the rest of the week, you can round up to one and a quarter pounds of turkey per person. Then you can make our favorite leftover turkey recipes.

Thanksgiving is an American holiday that centers on food and spending time with loved ones. Although it’s traditionally commemorated with family, in the last few years, celebrating Friendsgiving has become a hallmark part of the holiday for many young people.

This new holiday lets you share a meal with friends in lieu of family, or as a supplement to the traditional Thanksgiving feast. Some folks celebrate it the week before Thanksgiving, some celebrate it the week after. Some people opt to host this holiday on Thanksgiving Day. It’s a great way to include international friends in the American holiday, too. Plus, who doesn’t love a little extra pumpkin pie?

Whether you’re a seasoned pro or a first-time Thanksgiving host, we’ll show you how to plan the perfect Friendsgiving menu, set a casual holiday table and embrace the true meaning of the season.

Find more ideas in our Thanksgiving hosting handbook.

Bohemian Food Mash Up

The key to a successful Friendsgiving party is two-fold: good food, and lots of it. Ideally, everyone will bring a dish or beverage to pass. But if you’re hosting, we suggest supplying the main dish and a few sides, then let your friends fill in the gaps. (Bookmark our turkey guide for everything you need to know about cooking your holiday bird to perfection.)

Editor’s Tip: Even if you love green bean casserole, you don’t want six dishes of it showing up at your Friendsgiving. Make sure to send around a potluck sign-up sheet before the big day so everyone knows what to bring. This way you’ll avoid duplicate dishes and make it easy to cater to dietary restrictions.

When planning what you’ll serve, aim for simple recipes that don’t require a ton of time in the kitchen. (Need inspo? These 30-minute Thanksgiving recipes are holiday lifesavers.) After all, you want to be able to enjoy your friends, not spend the whole party scrambling in the kitchen.

Opt for slow cooker or make-ahead dishes, and don’t be afraid to buy a few things pre-made, too. We’re particularly partial to this slow cooker turkey breast and a batch of easy-peasy biscuits. When combined, the duo makes a delicious sandwich! Find these recipes (and more!) in our collection of Friendgiving menu ideas.

How to Set a Friendsgiving Table

Friendsgiving Decor Mash Up

When setting the table, simplicity is key. Remember that you’re here to have a good time, not impress your mother-in-law. Stick to a fun color scheme—such as navy, orange and gray—and don’t be afraid to buy disposable dishware or cutlery.

As the host, lay this linen table runner for a simple decorative touch to your feast and put together a holiday cheeseboard on this serving board. Let guests do the rest! Keep the casual feel of the party going by serving the meal potluck-style. Guests can get up whenever they’re hungry or need a refill, and all you have to do is relax.

Whenever you opt for a buffet, it’s a good idea to label all of the dishes. Old wine corks and card stock make for pretty labels (plus, you now have an excuse to drink more wine). To make the labels, simply cut a groove in the cork with a utility knife, write the dish name and any allergens on the card and secure in place.

If you’re not up for a crafting project, find out where to buy pre-made place cards (and all of our other amazing Friendsgiving decor).

How to Give Thanks: Gratitude Board

It’s easy to forget how thankful we are for our friends. Set up a reminder with a gratitude board. All you need is a chalkboard and some chalk. As guests arrive, have them write down a few things that they’re grateful for. After the party, take a photo of the board and send it out in a group text message or email so that you can always remember the good times.

Warmies bear being weighed

Best Overall

Warmies

I’ve been a fan of Warmies for years. After all, what’s not to love about cuddly toys you can pop in the microwave (or freezer!) for instant relief? Each plush weighs roughly two pounds and is scented with real French lavender.

In our testing, we found Warmies to have silky-smooth fur that stays soft—even after multiple uses—and a gentle weight that’s suitable for kids and adults alike. After heating, they stay warm for 40 minutes (or more), depending on how long and at what temperature you nuke.

The best part, however, is the sheer number of Warmies options on the market. Over 100 cute characters are waiting to keep you company. Choose from a variety of options like a beautiful bobcat, gray penguin or microwavable hippo. No matter how niche your interests are, there is a Warmies that fits the bill.

The only downside? These heated stuffed animals are a little large for even heating in some small microwaves. And, in the event your plush encounters a spill from last night’s spaghetti leftovers, the plush is surface-clean only.

Pros

  • 100+ animal options to choose from
  • Provides lasting warmth or coolness
  • Moderate price point
  • Silky smooth fur
  • Calming lavender scent

Cons

  • Tricky to deep clean
  • May not fit in all microwaves

Luxardo Cherries: We Tried This Gourmet Ingredient and Now There’s No Going Back https://www.tasteofhome.com/article/luxardo-cherries-review/ Fri, 14 Oct 2022 19:35:05 +0000 https://www.tasteofhome.com/?p=1892312 They are—quite literally—the cherry on top of any cocktail or dessert.

The post Luxardo Cherries: We Tried This Gourmet Ingredient and Now There’s No Going Back appeared first on Taste of Home.

]]>
As a Wisconsinite, there are few drinks I enjoy more than an old-fashioned—and not just any old-fashioned, a brandy old-fashioned. And while cheery, bright-red maraschino cherries are often the go-to at bars and my own fridge, I’ve learned over the years that switching up these sweets can really make my favorite cocktail sing. I’m talking about using Luxardo cherries.

What are Luxardo Cherries?

Not familiar with Luxardo cherries? These jarred cherries are actually the original maraschino cherries. Yep, they predate the neon red ones we know (and still love, especially in desserts like this chocolate-cherry Bundt cake). Luxardo has produced these next-level cherries since 1905, while our vibrant American versions came on the scene in the 1920s.

Luxardo cherries are made in Italy. Each jar is packed with Italian-grown sour marasca cherries that are candied and soaked in sweet syrup. Luxardos are on a different level than the ice-cream-shop maraschinos of your childhood. Each fruit is dark and sticky with a satisfying bite.

Plus, there are no artificial ingredients in Luxardos. You won’t find corn syrup or red dyes on the ingredient list, so the cherries actually taste like, well, cherries. They are also gluten-free, non-GMO, kosher and vegan. Each jar includes roughly 50% cherries and 50% syrup.

How We Tested Luxardo Cherries

Toh Luxardo Cherries Img 7821 Katie Bandurski Jvedit

I ordered a jar of Luxardo cherries from Amazon to determine whether this garnish deserves a permanent spot on my bar cart.

When the box arrived on a rainy Sunday, I was eager to dig in. After all, what tastes better on a chilly fall day than a warming cocktail? I was happy to see the jar wrapped in a thick layer of packing insulation to protect the glass from any shipping accidents.

On Their Own

For my first test, I wanted to try a cherry on its own. I opened the jar and was immediately awed by the dark, almost-black color of the cherries and their juice. They look nothing like traditional maraschino cherries. And to my joy, they taste nothing like them, either. At first bite, I was hit with the earthy, juicy flavor of a fresh cherry. These are truly next level. There’s no broken-down texture and no sickly-sweet aftertaste.

In a Cocktail

Next, I made my aforementioned favorite drink: a sweet brandy old-fashioned. When made sweet, this supper club cocktail relies on both a maraschino cherry for garnish and a small amount of cherry juice muddled with an orange slice and bitters.

From my previous test, I knew the garnish would be delicious (especially once it soaks up some of the brandy…yum!). But the marasca cherry syrup really kicked my homemade drink up a notch. It tasted akin to what I’d order at a bar—but without the $12 price tag. Could these cherries actually save me money?! They’re also a delicious addition to a cocktail kit.

In Food

For my last test, I texted my parents for a copy of a beloved family recipe: maraschino cherry cookies. We’ve been making (and eating!) these gems for as long as I can remember, and they’re always a fan favorite. The recipe is a simple butter cookie, rolled into balls and dipped in sugar. Then, just before baking, you add a halved maraschino cherry to each mound.

Now, my family has always used the standard grocery store cherries for this recipe. But I was excited to see how they’d turn out with Luxardo cherries. I whipped up a batch, and my first impression was, “Wow, these look different!” As previously mentioned, Luxardo cherries have a dark burgundy, almost-black hue that sets them apart from red-dyed maraschinos.

At first bite, I was hit with a wave of nostalgia—then something new. This cookie had the same light, buttery taste I know and love, but the cherry was a brand-new experience. It yielded a richer, more luxurious bite, and the cookie as a whole was more satisfying. I didn’t have to eat five to get my “cherry fix.” One or two did the trick. And in my opinion, the improved taste of these treats more than made up for the lack of red color.

Like most cocktail ingredients, Luxardo cherries last for a long time when properly stored. The back of the jar recommends stashing at room temperature in a cool, dark place.

If you’re thinking, “Well, what’s the catch? These cherries sound too good to be true!”—here it comes. There’s one notable downside to Luxardo cherries. A 14-ounce jar costs upwards of $20—roughly 10 times more expensive than a standard jar of maraschinos from the grocery store. Ouch.

Pros

  • Beautiful cherry taste
  • Satisfying mouthfeel
  • Natural ingredients list
  • Grown and produced in Italy
  • Luxurious, restaurant-quality experience
  • Long shelf life

Cons

  • Pricey
  • Dark color is not ideal for holiday baking

How to Use Luxardo Cherries

a plate of cookies topped with cherries and a cup of coffee in the background

While I’ll enjoy our cherries in an old-fashioned when the work week is done, there are lots of delicious ways to use Luxardo cherries in the meantime. And once you taste them, trust us, you’ll find excuses to use them (and the delicious syrup) any way you can.

Cocktails & Beverages

Luxardo cherries are the perfect way to upgrade any cocktail. Skewer a few Luxardo cherries onto a pick to garnish your favorite drink. Add these cherries to a Manhattan, Rob Roy or Tom Collins.

And don’t sleep on the syrup! Each jar of Luxardo cherries is packed with a thick, flavorful syrup. Use this in drinks that typically call for simple syrup or even grenadine.

Since these cherries and their syrup are alcohol-free, feel free to add a splash to kids’ Shirley Temples or into your morning cold brew.

Baking

While they won’t provide the same vibrant red color as the standard variety, Luxardo cherries are suitable in any recipe that calls for maraschino cherries. Some of our favorites include classic pineapple upside-down cake, cherry thumbprints and spumoni torte.

Frozen Treats

Cherries are one of our favorite ice cream toppings. So why not use them next time you host an ice cream social or make yourself a sundae? Try using the syrup in lieu of (or in addition to!) hot fudge on sundaes. Then top your banana split or turtle sundae with a Luxardo cherry or two.

You can also use Luxardo cherries in icebox cakes, ice cream pies and other no-bake desserts. They freeze well and make for a striking topping. Try Luxardo cherries in a no-bake cherry-almond pie, frozen cherry salad and banana split pie.

When shouldn’t you use Luxardo cherries?

While Luxardo cherries beat traditional cocktail cherries any day, there are still some times when the bright red option is better. If a recipe uses maraschino cherries to create a pink or red hue, use traditional maraschino cherries. Luxardo cherries and their syrup just will not provide that same color. The result will be dark and a very dull maroon.

Also, if you need maraschino cherries with stems, count Luxardo out. These cherries are stemless.

FAQ

Luxardo Maraschino Cherries

What do Luxardo Cherries taste like?

Opening up a jar of Luxardo maraschino cherries for the first time is pretty surprising. Inside, you’ll notice a striking difference compared to the typical cocktail cherries you see bobbing around in a jar. These cherries are small, dark—nearly black—and are packed in a thick syrup.

Luxardo cherries taste more like fresh cherries. They’re earthy, juicy and have some mellow nutty flavor as well. These cherries also have a satisfying texture. They’re tender yet still toothsome. They don’t have any sort of waxy consistency the way other cocktail cherries do.

What is special about Luxardo cherries?

Consider Luxardo cherries the Ferrari of cocktail cherries. These maraschinos are made in Italy and purveyed by several generations of the Luxardo family. The ingredients list is short and sweet, allowing the flavor and texture of the marasca cherries to shine.

Why are Luxardo cherries so expensive?

When you click “add to cart” or pick up a jar at the store, you’ll notice that Luxardo cherries cost significantly more than their bright red counterparts—about $20 a jar.

They are pricey because Luxardo uses marasca cherries, a particular type of cherry that’s only grown in northeastern Italy. It’s an uncommon variety and is therefore more expensive. Luxardo also uses high-quality ingredients and an age-old candying process, which pushes up the cost.

Do Luxardo cherries have alcohol?

No, Luxardo cherries do not have alcohol in them (or the syrup). You will notice that maraschino cherries do share a name with maraschino liqueur. They share a name since both use marasca cherry juice—just in different ways.

What Other Reviewers Had to Say

We’re not the only ones trading in ruby red maraschino cherries for Luxardos. More than 8,000 five-star Amazon ratings are in agreement.

“Really want to buy these but think they are too expensive? They are worth it,” says five-star reviewer, David Phillips. “I’ve tried lots of alternatives that vary from pretty good to awful. But there is no replacement for these.”

Verified purchaser, Sherry T., shares a similar rave review: “These are the only cocktail cherry you should ever buy. They are rich and delicious and provide your cocktail with the perfect next-level taste. While they are ridiculously expensive they are special and have no rival.”

And it’s not just Amazon reviewers! Taste of Home staffers are equally smitten.

“My family owns a bar, and this is the only brand we use there,” says Content Director Ellie Martin Cliffe. “You haven’t had a maraschino cherry until you’ve tried Luxardo. They’re the grown-up version of the kiddie cocktail garnish: sweet and a little tart (with no artificial colors). We always have a jar around for cocktails and ice cream. Full disclosure: Sometimes I’ll sneak a cherry for a sweet little snack.”

Final Verdict

Don’t get me wrong, I understand the appeal of bright red maraschino cherries in some contexts. But for me, there’s no going back.

Luxardo cherries are well worth the price tag. They’re high quality, flavorful, natural and undeniably delicious. I can’t wait to continue experimenting with them in cocktails and cherry desserts.

Plus, with the holiday season on the horizon, consider giving a jar of Luxardos as a gift to home bartenders or as a stocking stuffer. And, thanks to their gourmet ingredient status, Luxardo cherries make a great gift for bakers too.

The post The Our Place Always Pan and Perfect Pot Just Got a Mini Makeover appeared first on Taste of Home.

Like many people my age, I’ve spent the majority of my 20s flitting from one apartment to another. And while the locations and roommates have varied with time, one feature remains the same: a small kitchen.

As someone who loves to cook and bake regularly, I’ve had to adapt to these pint-sized spaces and get creative with my limited prep and storage options. (Looking at you, kitchen tables for small spaces!)

When I heard that Our Place was launching updated miniature versions of their beloved cookware, I was intrigued. Could the Mini Always Pan 2.0 and Mini Perfect Pot 2.0 be the answer to my small-space woes? Here’s what you need to know about these mini-yet-mighty pieces.

What Are the Mini Always Pan 2.0 and Mini Perfect Pot 2.0?

If you’ve been on social media in the past two years, you’ve seen the Always Pan. This TikTok-famous product boasts a super-slick nonstick cooking surface, built-in spoon rest and nesting basket. This piece of ceramic cookware is suitable for almost any cooking task, from sautéing to steaming. (One of our editors tried the Always Pan and loved it.)

The Perfect Pot is the Always Pan’s big sister. It features a deeper cooking surface, built-in strainer, roasting or steaming rack and notch spoon rest. This kitchen workhorse is ideal for roasting, braising and boiling, among other cooking methods.

And now, you can buy both the Always Pan and Perfect Pot in sleeker, smaller versions! These new pieces take all of the beloved features of the original pretty cookware and shrink them down to space-saving sizes.

“We got hundreds of requests for a smaller Always Pan and Perfect Pot for studio apartments, dorm rooms, travel and also just for something to use when you’re cooking for one,” says Shiza Shahid, co-founder of Our Place. “The minis are everything you’ve come to love about Our Place cookware, but now in a smaller size designed for versatility and convenience.”

Mini Always Pan and Mini Perfect Pot Features

The Mini Always Pan and Mini Perfect Pot keep all of the features we know and love from the originals. They’re made of non-toxic, nonstick ceramic, easy to clean and available in a range of beautiful colors. At launch, choose from six core colors: spice, steam, blue salt, char, sage and lavender.

Mini Always Pan

Always Mini Pan

The Mini Always Pan comes in at 16.9 inches long (including the handle), 8.5 inches wide and five inches high with the lid on. It holds 1.2 quarts of food, which is less than half of the original pan’s 2.6-quart capacity. It’s the ideal size for whipping up dinner for two. Or, use it as a complement to your existing cookware. The Mini Always Pan is perfect for frying an egg to top a hash, sautéing veggies for a side dish or warming up tortillas for taco night.

Mini Perfect Pot

Always Mini Perfect Pot

The Mini Perfect Pot has similar dimensions to the Mini Always Pan, but it’s a little deeper. It measures 16.9 inches long (including the handle), 8.5 inches wide and 6.7 inches high with the lid on. It holds 2.5 quarts of your favorite dish. For contrast, the original Perfect Pot holds 5.5 quarts. We’re already looking forward to dishing up cozy soups for two and small-batch pasta dishes this fall. And, just like the Mini Always Pan, this beauty is just as much a helpmate to your existing cookware as it is a stand-alone option. The small size works beautifully for steaming broccoli, warming up a sauce and other secondary cooking tasks.

What’s the difference between the original mini cookware and the new 2.0 versions?

The Mini Always Pan and Mini Perfect Pot were recently re-engineered following the launch of the Always Pan 2.0. The biggest change? These mini versions of the original bestsellers are now oven-safe! Featuring the new Thermakind toxin-free nonstick coating, the pans are still toxin-free and PFAS-free. However, these upgraded versions are now equipped for braising chicken thighs and cooking up crispy casseroles, just like the bigger Always Pan 2.0.

Where to Buy the Mini Always Pan and Mini Perfect Pot

Mini Cooking Duo

The Mini Always Pan and Mini Perfect Pot are available on the Our Place website. Pick up the Mini Always Pan for $115, the Mini Perfect Pot for $125 or a bundle of both for $195. If these mini versions are anything like the originals, they’ll sell out fast. Don’t wait to snag a set of your own (and maybe another as a gift idea for your favorite person)!

We tried this delicious countdown, and it's one of our top picks in 2023.

Yes, it’s fall. But we can still look ahead to cooler (and more festive) months. If you’re anything like me, the holiday season is slowly coming into focus. Christmas carols are making an occasional appearance on my “favorites” playlist. And I’ve started ideating holiday gifts for everyone on my list.

As an added bonus, seasonal items are popping up in stores as we speak. And one of my all-time favorites, the Bonne Maman Advent Calendar, just made its 2023 debut. Here’s what you need to know about this delicious countdown.

What is the Bonne Maman Advent Calendar?

Bonne Maman Advent Calendar 2023

The Bonne Maman Advent Calendar is every breakfast lover’s dream. This beautifully designed gift features 24 petite jars of Bonne Maman’s quality spreads and honeys. Each day leading up to Christmas, you’ll unwrap seasonal flavors like Cherry with Pink Peppercorn, Fig with Cardamom and Mirabelle Plum with Spices. I’m looking forward to dressing up toast, pancakes, waffles and even ice cream with a little holiday indulgence.

Using the Bonne Maman Advent Calendar is simple. Just crack open the first window on December 1, pull out your miniature jam jar and enjoy! Make this your morning ritual every day leading up to Christmas.

As an added bonus, this year’s calendar features a peek into Santa’s workshop, with artwork highlighting busy elves prepping for the big day. The ‎roughly 12-inch by 12-inch box is perfect for displaying at your coffee station, above the fridge or anywhere else that could use a little Christmas cheer.

Why I Love It

Bonne Maman Advent Calendar Review

I was lucky enough to get my hands on the Bonne Maman Advent Calendar for some firsthand testing. Yes, my calendar arrived in August. And no, I could not wait until December to dig in. Don’t worry, though. I won’t give all the surprises away!

After unwrapping the packaging and cutting through the plastic wrap covering, I was instantly impressed with the scenic art. As a kid who spent way too much time reading every inch of the cereal box during breakfast, I appreciate the great detail. And that’s just on the paper sleeve! Once you take the sleeve off, you’re greeted by more art and a set of hinged doors that open to the calendar itself.

2023 Bonne Maman Advent Calendar

Once open, like most Advent calendars, it’s a true test of self-control. I opened the first box to reveal a delicious fruit spread and a cheerful note. The door, while made of cardboard, was sturdy. I could easily pry it open, but there’s no need to worry about spoiled surprises with this calendar. And, if you’re careful, you can preserve the beautiful artwork. The perforations ensure each door opens cleanly.

In the name of journalism, I did end up opening every window—and can confirm all of the flavors are well-packed and delicious. There was nary a broken jar or repeat flavor. I love that this Advent calendar is designed with adults in mind. While some flavors are kid-friendly, others are likely a bit too adventurous for budding tastes. So while the little ones are digging into their chocolates every December morning, the rest of the family can get in on the fun too.

Plus, after the holiday rush, I now have 24 petite jam jars to fill with spices, plant saplings or even candle wax. The crafting options are endless!

Where to Buy the Bonne Maman 2023 Advent Calendar

Bonne Maman Advent Calendar Ecomm Via Amazon.com

The Bonne Maman Advent Calendar is selling for $45 on Amazon and the brand’s website. While a bit on the pricey side, the quality and attention to detail make it one of the most value-packed options on the market. Act fast, though. This calendar has a history of selling out before you can say “sugarplum.”

The post We Made Ina Garten’s Famous Chocolate Cake—and Here’s What We Discovered appeared first on Taste of Home.

]]>

I’m a sucker for a good cake recipe. Even if it’s not someone’s birthday, I’ll jump at the chance to whip up a multi-tiered treat. When I stumbled across this Ina Garten chocolate cake (aka Beatty’s Chocolate Cake), I knew I had to make it.

This beauty has over 2,000 reviews and maintains a 5-star rating! So, on a snowy day, I gathered up my ingredients and put her recipe to the test. Here’s what happened when I tried to bake like the Barefoot Contessa. And if you don’t want to whip it up at home, you can order it online and have it shipped to your doorstep.

Check out our best-ever chocolate cake recipes.

The Famous Ina Garten Chocolate Cake Recipe

Ina Garten Cake

Ingredients

  • Butter and flour, for greasing pans
  • 1-3/4cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups sugar
  • ¾ cups good cocoa powder
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk, shaken
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 extra-large eggs, at room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1 cup freshly brewed hot coffee

Frosting:

  • 6 ounces good semisweet chocolate (Ina recommends Callebaut)
  • 2 sticks unsalted butter, at room temperature
  • 1 extra-large egg yolk, at room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1-1/4 cups sifted confectioners’ sugar
  • 1 tablespoon instant coffee powder

Tools You’ll Need

Directions

Step 1: Get ready to bake

we tried Ina Garten's chocolate cake

I started by prepping my pans and ingredients. First, I preheated the oven to 350°F. Next, I used butter to grease two 8-inch by 2-inch round cake pans, then I placed a parchment circle on the bottom of the pan, buttered the paper, then lightly coated the surface with flour. (If you’ve never done this before, check out our no-fail guide to how to grease a cake pan.)

Next, I measured out all of my ingredients. This technique, called mise en place, may create a few extra dishes, but it makes the baking process a whole lot easier. When everything is pre-measured there’s no need to stop and level a cup of flour or worry that you forgot to add an ingredient.

Get more of Ina’s best cooking tips.

Step 2: Sift dry ingredients

Once my ingredients were ready to go, I used my KitchenAid Sifter & Scale attachment to quickly combine the flour, sugar, cocoa, baking soda, baking powder and salt in the bowl of my stand mixer. I mixed the dry ingredients on low until they were well combined.

You can use a traditional sifter or even a mesh sieve if you don’t have one of these fancy KitchenAid attachments.

Step 3: Combine wet ingredients

Then, in a separate bowl, I combined the buttermilk, oil, eggs and vanilla. Before adding the buttermilk I made sure to give it a few quick whisks since Ina specifically mentions in the ingredients section that the buttermilk needs to be shaken. I turned my mixer back on low, then slowly incorporated the wet ingredients with the dry.

Editor’s Tip: Buttermilk is an invaluable baking ingredient. It adds a hard-to-put-your-finger-on (but delicious) flavor while also creating a more tender cake.

Step 4: Add the secret ingredient

At this point in the recipe, the batter looked (and smelled!) delicious—but I still hadn’t added Ina’s secret ingredient: freshly brewed hot coffee. With my mixer on low, I added the coffee until it was just combined.

Don’t miss all our secret baking tips to take your treats from good to great!

Editor’s Tip: Adding coffee to your chocolate cake won’t make it taste like mocha. Instead coffee and instant espresso help to accentuate chocolate’s natural flavors.

Step 5: Bake

I divided the batter between my prepared cake pans and popped them in the preheated oven. As I poured the mixture, I realized that the batter was really runny. It made sense—since the recipe called for 2-1/2 cups of liquid—but I was a touch concerned that the cakes wouldn’t firm up.

Step 6: Remove the cakes

After 35 minutes, I checked on the cakes—and they were perfect! Clearly, I had nothing to worry about. Ina knew what she was doing. I set my timer again—this time for 30 minutes—to let the cakes cool. Once time was up, I worked a butter knife around the edge of each pan to help loosen the cakes, then flipped them onto a wire rack to cool.

Step 7: Melt chocolate

we tried Ina Garten's chocolate cake

While the cakes cooled, I started on Ina’s chocolate buttercream frosting. First, I chopped and melted the chocolate in a double boiler. If you don’t have a double boiler, it’s super easy to make one. All you need to do is nestle a heat-proof bowl over a few inches of simmering water. And, voila! Double boiler. Once the chocolate melts, set it aside and let it cool to room temperature.

Learn how to make Ina Garten’s outrageous brownies and more easy ways to melt chocolate.

Step 8: Beat butter until fluffy

For the next step, I used a hand mixer to beat the butter on medium speed until it was light and fluffy. About three minutes should do it. Then, I added the vanilla and continued to beat for another three minutes.

Now, you likely noticed that the original Ina Garten chocolate cake recipe calls for an egg yolk. I chose to omit this ingredient because the FDA recommends cooking egg yolks until firm. If you choose to add the egg yolk, you’ll end up with a richer, more decadent frosting. But honestly, it tasted great without the yolk, too.

Step 9: Finish the frosting

When the butter and vanilla was light and fluffy, I added the confectioners’ sugar and mixed it until creamy.

Then, I measured out 2 teaspoons of hot tap water, and dissolved the instant coffee powder in it. While continuing to beat on a low speed, I added the chocolate and coffee to the butter, mixing until blended.

Step 10: Frost the cake

Since the frosting contains melted chocolate, it firms up the longer it sits, so I knew I needed to work quickly. I started by placing four small pieces of parchment paper on the edges of my cake plate. These would catch any frosting drips and keep my cake plate clean as I worked. It’s a frosting technique the Taste of Home Test Kitchen uses.

I placed the first cake, flat side up, on my plate. I used an offset spatula to spread a generous layer of frosting over the first layer. Then, I placed the second cake on top of the frosting layer. I used my spatula to frost the top and sides of the cake. After smoothing the surface, I created texture by gently working my spatula from side to side, creating waves in the icing. To finish, I slid the parchment pieces out from under the cake. Want to try more recipes? Learn how to make chocolate cake from Matilda.

The Verdict

Ina Garten chocolate cake

I cut myself a slice of cake and—Oh. My. Gosh. It was so good. The coffee really boosted the chocolate flavor, creating a dark, rich cake. And the frosting? To die for. It was thick, luscious and extremely decadent. I only needed a small piece to feel satisfied.

I asked a few family members to try the cake, too. They all agreed it was delicious, but one mentioned that it was a bit dark for her taste. She prefers sweeter cakes and is an avid fan of milk chocolate, so keep that in mind if you’re baking for a major sweet tooth! Another tester thought that a fruit curd—like lemon or raspberry—in the middle layer would take this Ina Garten chocolate cake to the next level.

Wait, I’ve Seen This Recipe Before!

If this cake looks familiar, it’s because Ina’s recipe is the same as Hershey’s Black Magic Cake. She admits on her show, The Barefoot Contessa, that the recipe came from her friend Michael’s grandmother. Looking for more magic cake recipes? Tips for Ina Garten’s Chocolate Cake

Can I make this cake in cupcake form?

Yes! The ingredients are the same, and you can prepare them the same way. When it comes time to bake, Ina recommends reducing the cook time to 25-30 minutes for cupcakes. The recipe will yield 24 cupcakes.

The ingredients for the buttercream frosting will only make enough to frost 12 cupcakes, so double that part of the recipe to frost the whole batch.

How can I decorate my cake like a pro?

If you’re practicing your cake decorating skills or have a specific idea in mind for a birthday cake, there are lots of ways to turn regular buttercream frosting into a work of art.

You can make a dripped effect with homemade chocolate ganache or use your offset spatula to carve swirls or waves into thick layers of frosting. The easiest way to make your cake look fancy is to sprinkle chopped candy over the top or up the sides. For more ideas, check out our tips for fun cake decorating ideas.

How should I serve the cake?

Ina is known for her simple yet elevated recipes, and with this tip, you can serve cake just like the queen of the Hamptons. Before plating your slices of cake, make a homemade creme anglaise. It sounds fancy, but the easiest way to make this is by defrosting a good vanilla ice cream. Drizzle the melted ice cream over a serving dish, and place the slice of cake on top. Garnish with a couple fresh strawberries, and serve.
